In addition to Wodehouse, I recommend Beverley Nichols. Most famous as a flower arranger [Yes. Exactly] but he was also a fearless journalist, using a 'homely' column to make serious points.

He was a leading voice in anti-armaments/appeasement.

His laments about the 1930's 'modern world' sound extraordinarily like our laments today.
