About to unpack my new iPhone and do the Migration Assistant (Well it's called QuikChek or something 😛)

I am a little nervous. I have done this before, know how it works, and just guided my mom doing it a month ago but ♪What about Little Ol Me?♪

Gonna try it with Cable-to-Cable from iPhone 12Pro. Strangely erotic.

In prior examples, Lightning to Lightning is apparently possible but too silly.

Less worried about iPhone data but rather that cell service will transfer properly. Usually does! 🤞

the main alternative is bluetooth handshaking then Wifi to Wifi, but I'm interested in trying out the cabling route

Hard to know if it's going over cable or wifi. I know the phones use nearby bluetooth and a variant of a QR code to connect themselves to either the local trusted WiFi or maybe (maybe not anymore?) a multihomed wifi network of their own devising.

Either way, 3 hours? Yikes! Well we will see.

Ah already down to 2 hours.

Even my mom’s iPhone 8 to SE №3 only took about 1 hour over wifi.

It's wild that even Apple supports (and instructs how to) do a Lightning to Lightning wired transfer. But that seems hardly worthwhile and requires a somewhat obscure adapter usually not used for such a purpose.

(why did my mom buy an iPhone SE only a month ago? … she was enthused and worried when I told her it sounds like it might be the last iPhone maybe forever, or maybe for a long time to offer a fingerprint sensor!)

Today I'm using Lightning to USB-C, which is commonplace since it was in the box of my old iPhone.

Anyway, set up a stopwatch on my Mac to keep an eye on it, like I do a software update or food delivery … 🕰️🍕🧖

In future, the real butt-to-butt Migration Assistant is MagSafe-to-Magsafe updates! And maybe there's a rubber band in the box like you use for holding a lobster's claw together. 🦞

But Paul, you say, how can that be? It's just for charging. Oh but there is a data channel. MagSafe knows what color your case is.

And aparently gets firmware updates! (wuhhh?) 🤯

Wow, it did in fact take nearly exactly 2 hours (after an original 3 hour estimate). But of course now it has to re-download all the (available) apps while the device is fully usable.

@pmcg going from lightning to USB for Migration could be slower than via WiFi due to the 480Mbps physical limit being lower than what’s possible on newer Wi-Fi standards. Even Wi-Fi 5 could do 6933Mbps physical. (Wi-Fi 4, 600Mbps)

@rosyna I agree. I might have plugged the cables in later than was instructed. It was not clear to me which transport was used!
