So it turns out there aren’t any great tools for reverse engineering a 20 year old 32-bit PowerPC binary.

I’m not even sure if I could get Mac OS X 10.4.3 and Xcode 2.5 running on my M3 MacBook Air.

Oh my goddess, Microsoft Word for iOS is so much worse. It overrides the default “Look Up” menu item that iOS provides to text fields for free and replaces it with “Smart Lookup”.

Actually trying to use the “Smart Lookup” context menu item just shows a sheet that says “Smart Lookup” and contains zero text. No indication that the feature has been removed or that it no longer functions.

It just sits there, mocking me.

I mention this feature today because Microsoft just removed an extremely similar feature, called Smart Lookup, in Microsoft Office for Windows on January 1st, 2025 in order to push Copilot, Microsoft’s branding for their “AI” efforts.

If you are on macOS, select a word in any app (including Microsoft Word) and just smack ⌃⌘D on your keyboard. It’ll show a pop-up with the definition of the word and whatever other options you set in Dictionary.app’s preferences.

In fact, in most apps, you don’t even have to select the word, just mouse over it and hit the key combo. This excludes Microsoft Office apps, you must select the word first.

I saw some complaints that complained Apple Intelligence would use disk space for the models, even if you never engaged with Apple Intelligence and that that was a travesty. It’s 4.84GB-7GB, fraction of total disk space.

And since it uses the MobileAsset framework to deliver the models, they’ll get purged when the space is actually needed if Apple Intelligence is switched off.

What’s the Swifty replacement for CoreData? Or specifically, something like CoreData that won’t get the backing store corrupted even if the host app crashes a lot? Is CoreData the latest thing?

(I’m trying to solve the halting problem and that’ll be a road lined with crashes)

Now, if iOS/macOS/tvOS started automatically generating and setting wallpapers/desktop pictures based on the type of foods and beverages Apple Intelligence detected you liked in your photos, then I’d be super pissed, irregardless of how much I love Taco Bell and Baja Blast.

What is default now about Apple Intelligence in macOS 15.3, iOS 18.3, et fam is that models will be downloaded in the background and the manual options to interact with them will be available if you’re in a region with Apple Intelligence

The funny thing about Apple Intelligence being on by default, you still have to actually interact with the features to get the Apple Intelligence stuff. It’s not like it just magically starts taking screenshots of all your apps and storing them.

The writing tools still have to be invoked manually. The generative imaging still has to be used manually. Siri doesn’t magically connect to ChatGPT or anything, you still have to manually enable it. If you don’t, nothing is different.

Starting February 17, 2025, Apps without trader status will be removed from the App Store in the EU.

This means you must publicly list an address and phone number to list even free apps in the EU. https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=einwn76m

I wonder how many entitlement checks in iOS and macOS still treat “” as “”.

In the past, there were many entitlement checks that only checked if the key (the entitlement string) existed and completely ignored the value. Made validating proper behavior when an entitlement was disabled very tedious!

What’s fun is that on macOS 14 and later, apps can be either in Cocoa menu mode (AppKit mode) (new) or Carbon menu mode (old). Depends on the SDK you used to build the app.

My poor Carbon…
