Toot

Written by Janne Moren on 2025-01-14 at 11:00

I'm a little confused about #pixelfed . I've looked at a couple of instances, and apparently you're only allowed 5-20 pictures in total? So your older pictures get deleted as you post new ones?

Also, the feed - at least to me - looks very much like when you post pictures here on Mastodon.

What's the selling point of creating a new pixelfed account over posting pictures here on Mastodon?

@jannem You might be looking at the maximum number of photos per post. For example, https://metapixl.com/ allow 20 photos or one photo per post, each with a maximum file size of 25MB.

@proactiveservices

Ahh, that makes more sense!

...with that said, now I wonder what a social image sharing app with a low total limit of images would be like. You'd only be able to show the things that matter most to you right now, and you'd have to be harshly selective - a good thing for most of us.

@jannem Quality over quantity; a concept that I think about when it comes to adding #AltText.

@jannem 5-20 total? That must be an instance specific thing then.

@jannem I'm not sure where you saw the 5-20 pictures total thing. This is not the case. (it's 20 pictures per post, if I'm correct).

If you're active on Mastodon, there may not be a need to create a PixelFed account (I have one, and indeed, I don't use it much), especially if you post pics on Mastodon.

The way I see it, it's really for people not active on Mastodon mostly. Also, the UI is quite different and some people may be attracted to it.

@jannem

But all in all, one of the great things about the Fediverse is that you don't have to have accounts on all platforms (I tend to do it, but it's most to compare them and see their specific purpose)

@David

Yes, I mostly wondered if I'm missing out on something by not having one. I mostly post pictures on Flickr, but they're of course not federated.

@jannem You're not if you don't need one. And you can still follow Pixelfed accounts from Mastodon.

@jannem No such limit on my instance.

Pixelfed selling point is same as the selling point with Instagram.
