Toot

When I was in my twenties, I used to think that when people are faced with multiple options they generally did what was in their own, or their side's, best interest. Thus, if your own move was related to theirs, you should try to anticipate their move by putting yourself in their shoes, and then act accordingly. In competitive situations that gave you an advantage, and in cooperative situations it was to everyone's benefit.

Then in my thirties, I came to the conclusion that people in fact were really poor at determining what's in their best interest, and chose options pretty much randomly. Thus, you could either wait for their move and then adapt yours, or just wing it at random and at least seize the initiative, and hope that that brought on a beneficial conclusion for either yourself, or both.

Now, it seems to me that people are most inclined to consider everything a competition, and choose the option that hurts the other side the most, and not give a damn about the fact that they are hurting themselves too.

@DH0PE I honestly don't know if the world is any different today from what it was like 10 or 20 years ago, or whether it's always been what it is now and my perspective has changed.

@xahteiwi that does not matter, it is how you experience the world. And I do it the same, maybe because it is like that or maybe because I'm also older now ...

@xahteiwi people always choose to their own benefit. You just don’t always know what they value. For example, sometimes what they value is watching you squirm or fail. And so that’s what they choose because it counterintuitively “benefits” them most, by the value system they’re following at the time.
