People who don't add several layers of old towels to their ironing board... how, why?

My favourite thing about replacing the cover on my nana's ironing board was pulling off the decades of towels she'd put on.

@Natalie Wut? Don't the covers usually have padding in them? (I haven't ironed for a long time... haha!!)

@Natalie I never heard of this, honestly! Why would you do that? Seems like it would just add stuff that would move around while ironing.
