Just read the Vulture article on the Gaiman story, and it seems like the most common thread among the victims is powerlessness. Most of them were in a state of being without money, without friends/family support, without the means to survive, while Gaiman actively used his status as wealthy person to assert power and be violent.
I generally advocate for UBI, but its counter is also important: there need to be hard limits on wealth and income.
