@bazkie Might be about profit, but I suspect it's more about two things. First and foremost is that a lot of people, most people?, want a social platform that is huge. Better for developing an audience, and the more famous you are, the bigger the audience potential the better. Also, for similar reasons, they prefer an algorithmically powered ("algorithmic choice") platform like BS because it helps concentrate eyeballs on the top 20% of profiles.

@bazkie Also, large platforms are not a town square. In a town square, the size is mostly limited to the size of the town, number of people. Meaning, pretty much anyone can be heard, even folks in the audience. They can walk up to the podium and be heard by the entire town. Not so in a global square dominated by large follower accounts. Most people are shouting into the void, or, at best, actually speaking mostly to a much smaller personal community of "mutuals", which seems to actually be what Mastodon/Fedi does best already
