Famous multi-millionaires plot insurgency against billionaires in wasteful attempt to recreate the Fediverse using a proprietary protocol 😒

@Defiance I don't understand why anyone would do this, when the fediverse/mastodon exists.
..unless they are profit-driven, I guess.

@bazkie Might be about profit, but I suspect it's more about two things. First and foremost is that a lot of people, most people?, want a social platform that is huge. Better for developing an audience, and the more famous you are, the bigger the audience potential the better. Also, for similar reasons, they prefer an algorithmically powered ("algorithmic choice") platform like BS because it helps concentrate eyeballs on the top 20% of profiles.

@Defiance hehe you're probably right, but that feels kinda ironic, because I think those traits are a big part of why social media is so bad/toxic/unhealthy in the first place

@bazkie Also, large platforms are not a town square. In a town square, the size is mostly limited to the size of the town, number of people. Meaning, pretty much anyone can be heard, even folks in the audience. They can walk up to the podium and be heard by the entire town. Not so in a global square dominated by large follower accounts. Most people are shouting into the void, or, at best, actually speaking mostly to a much smaller personal community of "mutuals", which seems to actually be what Mastodon/Fedi does best already

@Defiance indeed!!

@Defiance I wish I better understood the differences between the protocols. I do read Christine Lemmer-Webber's posts, but a lot of it is still over my head. But if communities and individuals can't (realistically) set up their own instances, I don't see the point.

@cosmog Yeah, it can be confusing. And I'm no expert that's for sure. But my understanding is that the protocol that powers the Fediverse (Activity Pub) is open, public, and does not support algos. Whereas the BS protocol (AT) is proprietary, meaning it is owned by a company, and a for profit company at that.
There are lots of technical differences as well, pros and cons of both protocols imho, but at the end of the day, they are both trying to solve similar problems. One is for profit, the other, not.

@Defiance Thanks, yeah I need to do some more directed reading. For example, I keep seeing AT referred to as an "open" protocol so I get confused about what's proprietary. My understanding of the problem was that the firehose of post data was owned/hosted/controlled by BS, and that's why it's not really "decentralized" and why ultimately users are dependent on this (for profit) entity to decide what the experience is for everyone. But idk.

@cosmog That actually sounds pretty accurate to me. But yeah, more reading is due here.

@Defiance They do have support from Cory Doctorow, Brian Eno and Bill S. Preston Esq., so that' something.
