For folx considering air quality monitors following the LA fires. A few months ago I purchased an Air Gradient One for indoors due to fires near my hometown. You can use the code "SABP13ET" for 10% off (SmartHomeJunkie). It's open source, homekit compatible, and hackable, but also works well out of the box. You can view historical data from web view on your phone or laptop. Having a monitor allowed me to determine if an air filter was necessary from the fires and on the day to day reminds me to air out the room from CO2 build up or from running my stove, even when out of the house. Other monitors I considered from reviews on reddit where the HotKrem 5-in-1 and TemTop M2000c on the more affordable end. I also considered mainstream competitors like Air Things, Purple Air, and Govee. I decided that the price was not worth the performance, though there are plenty of people who are satisfied with their purchase.

Always check local ordinances around whether you can start a fire before burning anything on your property or when camping and hiking. Some grounds may require that you keep a fire extinguisher on you. Make sure you are familiar with how to report a fire and have a plan to evacuate during no burn periods.

Wildfires are exacerbated as a result of climate change and mandates that prevent cultural burning. Fire is good and necessary when done with intention and understanding of the ecosystem. For example (not a blanket statement), fire may be needed to break down debris in forests. When this isn't done regularly, the build up can cause a massive fire to develop that wouldn't happen if it were kept in check. We also need to consider what kind of plants and fungi are able to grow or not when triggered by fires, from the under or overstory. Fire can make a huge impact on the overall canopy.

Some communities have air filters that folx can borrow for the purposes of COVID-19 safety, though they also come in handy for fire scenarios. Fun fact is that one of these such grassroots orgs based in LA is a furry-led group known as "COVID-19 Safe Furs". They also offer masks and rapid tests.

Remember that even in emergency situations like this, front-line workers often have no choice to stay unsafe conditions without necessary PPE. A large number of firefighters fighting the LA fires are those who are incarcerated.
