One of the major reasons I have trouble giving what is currently termed “AI” any quarter is that the people running the companies continue to say in no uncertain terms that they hate us and want to go away because thought and creativity repulse them. I will not use this stuff for any reason, and if I have to retire because of it, I’ll do that.

and before anyone comes at me as a luddite or whatever, I work in machine learning. I work on DNNs and deep-learning for domain specific tasks for which they are well-suited and act as a useful adjunct (classification, supervised control systems, etc.). There’s many places they aren’t the right tool! LLMs and GenAI are uniquely corrosive, IMO because of their attack on creativity, their inability to state confidence on their answers, and their masquerading as the right tool for all jobs.

@venya I really don’t understand how that person can say all that with a straight face. There’s something wrong with them. Even if they believe it, they have to know what it sounds like.

@stoneymonster Luddite was only against machines being used by bosses to suppress and displace workers. He didn’t have a problem with machines used to make their lives better.

@stoneymonster retire, wait for it all to fail and the fad to implode, then come back in as a consultant to satisfyingly rip all the misapplied LLMs out, at a nice high "I told you so" rate.
