Why do people tend to believe powerful peoples lies?

Those close to them, often do not.

Is it, because we are only ever shown a small part of these persons and missing the wholesome picture you get when you truly interact with a person over several days?

Does that lack of information allow people to fill in the blanks, with what they would like to see in a person with power over them?
