Ancestors

In 2025, to keep the #AUSPEX momentum, I thought about posting one daily loop then assembling a weekly snapshot to make a 52 track mix for the whole year.

I've written down a set of rules to define how a pattern should evolve, but I realize the result would be more interesting if I loosened the rules and just focused on releasing one track per week, while keeping this daily evolving mix idea.

So... this year I'm kind of doing my own #WeeklyBeats.

I'll post new tracks on Sundays :)

I’m still undecided about which language I should use to name the album and tracks of my next yearly one-track-a-week #music project.

Unlike the previous one, I’d like to come up with more meaningful titles, with a somewhat poetic and/or autobiographical vibe, but I’m not even sure it would be necessary or useful. Not to mention writing titles will take me more time, no doubt about that.

What would you prefer?

I am extremely not surprised by the outcome of this poll. Thanks, Fedi 😂

Now I don’t really want to simply name tracks as numbers in Toki Pona, that sure would feel semi-cryptic, but it would also get boring pretty quickly.

So it will be Toki Pona indeed, but probably without a particular emphasis on numbers.

So, as promised, I'm starting a new musical journey.

Every week in 2025, I'll add a new track to this album, to carry on where the previous track ended. You can think of it as a year-long episodic mix.

Compared to the AUSPEX soundtrack, where every track was a weekly collage of the same evolving sample, this project will probably sound a bit more refined. It is focused on flow and composition. Everything is sequenced manually, even if you can still expect all kinds of accidents, happy or not.

Grab the album here, it's free :)

Toot

Time for this year's second track! It's a bit darker, a bit more restless, and features quite a lot more beats than the usual, while keeping an ambient, ghostly side.

Building upon the previous patterns is inspiring. I compose a new pattern every day, but I also refine the previous ones. So the result sounds a lot less chaotic than my weekly mashups from 2024, even if it doesn't follow a classic song structure.

Descendants

Here's the third track of the year.

:pilin: :ike: :li: :kama: :wawa:

It's quite cathartic and definitely more brutal than the usual, with a few equally unusual post-rock elements. It's also a mess. I still like how it builds up. Ironically, I started the week wanting to do something more relaxing and #ambient than the previous track...

Got in a heated argument that was bound to happen with some close family and I'm still livid about it. I guess it shows.

And it's time for the fourth track of 2025.

:waso: :ni: :li: :toki: :nasa:

But apparently, it's still not time for relaxing music yet. This one has a bit more of a hip hop vibe, and also flirts with IDM. It's rather wild, actually. But that's the point. Not knowing where a track will lead, and embracing whatever the day, then the week brings, trying to make the best of it.

Five weeks mean five tracks, so here's the latest:

I'd say we're still in some IDM-adjacent territory. Probably even more than during week 4, but in a smoother way. As the world outside is getting more chaotic, the world inside is getting a bit quieter. Something like that... I'd be curious to know what this track makes you feel.

A clown here just exclaimed "nice chords!" when I played ot, and I'm forced to agree.

I really like the progression on this one too. About halfway in I was enjoying how all of this seemed to erupt out of a single tone.

@RussSharek Glad you (and this other clown) like it! Looking at the previous tracks (quite literally, I was looking at their waveforms) I realized I'm unintentionally using rather similar structures with changes occurring at the same intervals. It's funny because I thought I had no clue at building interesting progressions, but apparently I'm getting better, that's motivating :)

@ice

Literally looking at your music seems like a neat way to get an overview of patterns like that.
