Toot

Mobian now officially supports the original PineTab (again, support was removed a few years ago)!

Installation instructions (for those of you who still have an original PineTab) can be found here: https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/PINE64/PineTab

@mobian Thank you whichever it is but, to be clear, by “original PineTab” do you mean the PineTab 1 or the Early Adopters' version?

(I have an EA PineTab which stopped booting a while ago. It boots JumpDrive from SD OK but I've been meaning to try reinstalling to the internal memory but it was running a very out-of-date Mobian before and I hadn't got round to looking for another system it could run so this could be very good news for me.)

@edavies I mean version 1. You can try it on the early adaptor's edition, but the display driver probably won't work. It uses a different display panel and I'm not sure if there's a mainline driver for it, but the Mobian device tree is for version 1 (so the early adopter edition's display driver isn't used).

Again, testing is the only way to know more.

@mobian Thanks, I'll try it off an SD card at some point (got it on charge now as it's been lying idle for a while).

@edavies some further information:

Pinetab 1 in question is vague name, since it covers both revision

We don't support Developer Edition (100 devices shipped to developers). Early Adopter revision was shipped to customers (1000 devices).

According to the wiki there are two PineTab revisions: Developer Edition and Early Adopter Edition. We support only the later if I understand correctly.

@mobian Thanks for that. But I'm not sure it's complete: AIUI: there were indeed Developer and Early Adopter versions. Then Covid hit, the prices of screens and other components went through the roof, and PineTab operations went on a long pause. A few years later more general releases of the PineTab 1 happened followed fairly rapidly by the significantly different PineTab 2 which obsoleted the 1 (though they were sold in parallel for a while). I.e., I think there were PineTab 1s after the first approx 1100 you mention.

Again AIUI, the screens on all three were different though the tweaks between the Developer and Early Adopter were fairly minor. I could easily be wrong, though: Pine's messaging on all this has not been great for a device intended for developers.
