I graduated HS in 1984, after being bullied almost continuously my entire K-12 existence.
Without doubt, the people who were the worst to me, the ones who straight up told me that killing myself would make the world a better place? Nerds. Geeks. Pick your name.
They were cruel like they had fucking doctorates and a practice.
The Jocks? Eh, sometimes, but that was random and they were always lazy about it.

As I’ve gotten older, I find that jocks are a little wary of you at first when you come into their spaces, but if you’re not a dick, and they see you putting in the work, they’re pretty cool. I used to go to a gym that trained some college and pro athletes and those folks were absolutely cool. They saw me working hard and that was the “entry fee” as it were.

The shit you see here? The gatekeeping and all? It happens in jock spaces because humans, but the relentless fuckery that nerds specialize in? The endless gatekeeping, the endless pissing contests, the endless egomania?
It happens, but it’s far less in jock spaces than nerd spaces. I always feel safer in a gym than at a ‘con.

@bynkii I think part of the problem with the whole “jocks“ & ”nerds“ thing is that the “jocks picked on us” is from Fucking High School.
There’s a subset of jocks that don’t outgrow it and I could comment on that, but I’m gonna leave that be. Most “jocks” do outgrow it, and generally, they love to see someone come into their space and enjoy it.
Unfortunately, a lot of “nerds” do the opposite, they internalize it and then pass it along, amplified.
