I've been lisping since the 90's, and just started python last year.

The feedback one gets with python code is so much less "my way is the only way it should be done" than it is with lisp.

Lisp is such a powerful language, it's bizarre that so many people want to pigeonhole it into something so very limited.

@ksaj hehe otoh it doesn't come with sufficient opinions. I personally am disappointed with await/async. It's not integrated and violates the 'one way to do it' dictum ... weird how they suddenly had to add it as other languages were doing it too...

but perl was just optimizing for fun. it's not necessarily the worst

@Janus @ksaj My thoughts exactly. I still think that it's a good idea for a language and its ecosystem to strive for a universal sense of style. Makes it easier to grok someone elses code and relieves people like me who are constantly worrying about how to express something of some of the anguish of finding the "best" way of doing things.

@Janus @semit0ne Around Y2K I helped a company define their security practice. One part was to develop a database, because they had many similar-but-not-the-same servers and other systems, they wanted to keep track of the kinds of vulnerabilities they typically faced.

I knew nothing about PERL, but bought a book and programmed all the stuff that talked to the database. It was so easy I was pretty shocked.

PERL can get complicated, but at least for this purpose, it totally lived up to its reputation.
