So, once my new battle station is implemented, I've been thinking.
Considering how difficult it is getting for people like me to get a reasonable gig these days, maybe it's time I pivot and become something of a Youtuber.
(shudders.)
I'm serious though; as much as I hate saying things like "Smash that like button," I can't deny that the residual income ad revenue on my videos could make would be a huge help. I'm 50 years old and a deep embedded engineer; there's literally no market for people like me anymore.
But, I put it to you now. What could I do, video-wise? I figure I could perhaps document the development of VM/OS and, later, a physical computer on which its apps can run? Is this even remotely interesting? I can't imagine that it would be, since I just don't know how to make hacking on software enticing enough to warrent a Youtube series.
YES, I know of PeerTube. And I most likely would host videos there as well. But I am finding I definitely need some manner of residual income that is greater than $0 at this point.
Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks!

@vertigo If it excites you enough to talk about it, it will find an audience just as excited. Usagi Electric does videos about old minicomputers and one bit microcontrollers, and it's great.

@vertigo most of the videos I watch are people making physical things, yet I have no interest in watching people write or talk about code. I'm not sure why, actually.
But I do know people who watch programming streams. It's a thing.

@vertigo I'd recommend watching Coding Adventures for inspiration: https://inv.nadeko.net/playlist?list=PLFt_AvWsXl0ehjAfLFsp1PGaatzAwo0uK
The self-deprecating humour & fascinating subjects makes them very compelling! I'm not usually one for coding streams.
Maybe Ben Eater?: https://inv.nadeko.net/channel/UCS0N5baNlQWJCUrhCEo8WlA
Focuses on the digital-hardware side, which is a subject I often find poorly introduced.

@alcinnz The thing with Coding Adventures is that each video is a completely different topic of interest. VM/OS is itself a long-term project; each video released would basically document its progress. Usagi Electric's videos seem to be a better analog here (h/t to @mos_8502 for the recommendation)
This isn't to say that I can't learn a thing or two from Coding Adventures. His video on Truetype font rendering is amazing!

@vertigo There's a market for deep embedded folks, but as far as I can tell most of it has moved out of the US... Unless maybe you're willing to make weapons... :(

@vertigo the YT game is dicey. If you want to actually make an income off it, that's rough AF. But if it's for hobby / sharing purposes then that'd be neat!
I guess you could do like 10min vids demoing things you've recently implemented, and maybe go into a lil detail on how you did / show it.
I've find the "planning" and "planning to plan" sort of long-winded vids boring, I'd rather see things being made, or the final product, or both. Just get to the point / show the thing.

@colinstu No planning sessions on video. If I did this, I'd work it like a TV studio, where I'd have a full season recorded before I even uploaded a single video. Then, I would just upload every week or something.

@colinstu
No, my idea was to use YT as "a" source of passive income, but not my only source of income.
I also want to create my own company that sells things through crowd-supply, be it input devices for PCs or things for the retro-computing market.
There would be some overlap in that the stuff I show on YT might be parts/products/whatever I'm selling elsewhere. Etc.

@vertigo makes sense! :>

@vertigo My dude I’m thinking the same. Been posting on Instagram a lot lately. YouTube is next. And of course I will post to PeerTube TOO.
Look the reality is if we want to make money to pay the bills we gotta go where the people are and we can play the algorithm game better than most because we are smart, calm, and calculated in our approaches to everything in life.
We got this.
