It's done. I've just deleted my Facebook account, and my Instagram account. Along the way, I noticed I created the Facebook account almost exactly 20 years ago. God, what a mistake.
If I log back in to either by Feb 10, it reactivates. Gee, good to know f_cking Zuck has some time to realize what an asshole he's become, and re-earn my presence. Yes, there is a greater chance that I will be declared the king of England.
But I'll give him that long.

Not that there's anything to be done about it, but your actions made me think about why a company like FB is entitled to keep all the information you posted in the account while it was active.
Seems to me you've made your feelings known and they should delete EVERYTHING you posted. You've dissolved your relationship with them.
All they're doing by keeping your information is providing an attractive opportunity for identity theft in your future.

If we had a legislature that wasn't dependent on donations from the wealthy for its elections, things might be different.

I try not to envy those that have things that I don't, but I really, really envy the data privacy protections the EU affords citizens of their member states.

This week, after seeing the news about german universities leaving Twitter, I began writing to my university about leaving Twitter and Facebook. Also, to the newspaper I subscribe to and to an association I am part of.
Online activism is nice, but let's not forget real life.
I have had it with GAFAM, but I haved it even more since the Twitter's involvment in the last Trump's election.

And with Trump's mad idea of taking over Canada, Panama and Groenland, I have had it more than I can I have it.

@Professor_Stevens If you don't login by then, they'll still keep your account on hold. I deleted my account over a decade ago and they periodically reactivate it. I don't login again because that implies I agreed with this. They'll never truly delete your account.

I assume what I write on the internet is forever. What they can't do is actually be me using their system. Without users, Zuck has nothing to sell to advertisers.
Also, I just don't want to be associated with his operation anymore.

@Professor_Stevens @Lizette603_23 @LilPecan I wish it was that easy. I’d love to leave #Meta and Zuck behind. But there’s the issue that community groups I’m in are only on #Facebook and post updates only on Facebook. Also, I have connections, some of them family, where our only connection is Facebook. I know it shouldn’t be this hard, but it’s a bit of a problem for me.

@Thumper1964 @Professor_Stevens @Lizette603_23 @LilPecan as someone without FB, or anything other than Fedi, it is soooo hard! 1 thing people don’t consider is… classifieds. I moved to a rural area a few months ago & I cannot look for any used furniture, nor services, without FB! It’s kind of crazy. I still refuse to use it, but it makes everything very, very hard & lonely.

I hear you. I was a member of our local "Buy Nothing" FB group. Well, I'm going to approach them about having a Mastodon presence.
I know it's hard, and not everyone is equally able to move at this time. But I am, and I want to encourage to consider if they are too. Fostering hate towards the powerless crosses a line with me. More than one, in fact. I was willing to give up "Buy Nothing" after that.

Now, how would we do that? On FB, Buy Nothing is done as groups, one for each locale that has a Buy Nothing community. Mastodon doesn't have groups. Could we do it with hashtags? Something else?

I think I saw somewhere there are groups of some type. Or hashtags, possibly. The master account would be @buynothing@...some server.
Perhaps @FediTips can help?

There are useful things called "groups" on here, but they work very differently to groups on Facebook.
Groups on here are special accounts that basically just repeat any post sent to them, which makes it easier for lots of people to discuss a common topic across many servers. They're sort of like "super hashtags" because they send posts to other servers more easily.

@Professor_Stevens @DEDGirl @Thumper1964 @Lizette603_23 @LilPecan Please let us know how it goes. I think those groups also work because moderation.

You may be right. The ones I've been in all had moderators. What's interesting is that the moderators have almost nothing to do. Everyone plays by the simple, sensible rules. But, the fact that there are moderators at all may be part of the reason.
