And just like that the discourse on the Fediverse has shifted to people on here saying folks who still maintain Facebook accounts have less worth as people and those toots are getting boosted. Some of you all are just too much.

@Geojoek It's so easy to get angry and say things like this. Mastodon is absolutely not immune to this, and in fact might be worse in some ways... I try hard to avoid (and sometimes block) the shrieking, angry people that demand that I do whatever it is that they are fixed on today. They're allowed their opinions just as I am allowed to say "no."

I'm at the point where folks who somehow make it past my content filters (so I don't see such things) get no quarter from me. 😂

@Geojoek It's good for your sanity. I just blocked a half dozen people that followed me last night on just the suspicion that they could be fake, spammers, or just looking to promote themselves. pushes NUKE button

@croyle @Geojoek I'm going to have to prune down a few follows soon because I'm getting a flood of political stuff that I just don't want to be inundated with. Sooooooooooo many re-toots.

@douglasvb @Geojoek I favor accounts that post original thoughts and not just 99% re-toots. I get plenty of political re-toots from people I do follow so there's no reason to follow someone that only re-shares others' thoughts.

@croyle @douglasvb @Geojoek don't forget you can hide boots! It's nice for those accounts that boost political content.

@bhhaskin @douglasvb @Geojoek Good reminder. There are some accounts that do post original content that I like but also carpet-bomb my feed or post objectionable (to me) re-toots and such. In those very few cases I do hide re-toots from them,.

Yes. I'm following a fellow mastoham's policy of disabing boosts immediately upon following most people but some accounts have transitioned to mostly those and I had to go back and retroactively disable it. Numerous accounts transitioned from posting mostly ham stuff to FB-style political venting, which is totally fine but most of it's not hashtagged or CW'd and/or uses deliberate misspellings or other obfuscation, so those get unfollowed, sadly.

@Geojoek @croyle @bhhaskin @douglasvb carpet bomber boosters are annoying (and changing your user name to promote a political message really irritates me), I totally agree.
I do try and tolerate the topic-du-jour hue and cry that goes up from time to time though, because it teaches me about what is important to people on the fediverse that I otherwise have no venn diagram overlap with in many cases. At the very least it helps flesh out larger narratives I might not otherwise hear.

@Geojoek @croyle @bhhaskin @douglasvb And full disclosure, I deleted Facebook recently, and I think their moderation changes are reprehensible. But denigrating people for continuing to use Facebook, which was Geo's original point, is also terrifically inappropriate; they have their reasons, or are working through it. C'est pas tes oignons

I think I’m in a situation that most people are in: we would love to remove most social media from our lives— but it’s shifted culture wide communication practices so deeply that for many (most?) people doing so is a decision to become very isolated from in person community because social media is one of the last remaining 3rd spaces. I’ve also known dozens of people to make a show of leaving Facebook over the years and they don’t end up keeping in touch.

That being said most people I know with accounts on Facebook have either left it or have been only lurking starting years ago, but especially since lockdown ended
My primary reason for being on it was being homebound for many years with EBV/CFS, and I found it was the easiest way to get people in my life to acknowledge that I still existed once I became sick.
There’s also the tie-in with the epidemic of loneliness among middle-age and older folks.

@Geojoek @ve3qbz @croyle @bhhaskin other reasons for retaining FB are the marketplace, the local crime and emergency groups, and various specialty hobby groups that exist nowhere else.
It's a bit frustrating.
