Toot

This is weird, right?

I use an #extension developed by Google¹ as a #dictionary in my #browser. I've been using it for 12+ years. I've never seen this behavior.

If I use the extension to search for the word 'fascist' or 'fascism', I get "no definition found."

If I search for those words via #Google #Search, I get the expected results. I noticed this about 3 hours ago.

Does anyone have an idea what's going on here?

¹I am aware I need to move away from google. I will.

@IAmDannyBoling Perhaps whoever made the dictionary thought that 'fascist' is a derived word. Does it recognise 'fascism' or 'fascistic' ?

@riley

It does define 'fascistic' but it won't define 'fascism'.

@IAmDannyBoling Then, somebody took it deliberately out of the dictionary.

Does it have other popular isms?

@riley

It returns definitions for capitalism, socialism and authoritarianism. In the 12+ years I've used it, the only time it's not returned definitions was when I misspelled a word.

@riley

I'm sorry, Riley, but I don't understand what you're asking this time.

@IAmDannyBoling A lot of the sort of words that right-wingers might want to take out of a dictionary and introduce under new verbiage come from 1984 and Newspeak. Words such as 'unperson', 'crimestop', 'unbellyfeel'. 'Memory hole' is the meta for these; it was the Minitrue's system of pipes for collecting the anterectification versions of documents and making them disappear in a fire.

So, in trying to map out what else was removed, checking out a bunch of Newspeak words that are in common modern use might be a good starting point.

@riley

Ah yes, I get the reference now. Thank you. This is a great tip.

Well, I used the extension to look up 'unperson', 'crimestop', and 'unbellyfeel' but only the first one returned a definition: "a person whose name or existence is denied or ignored, especially because of a political misdemeanor."

I'll keep looking!

@IAmDannyBoling Considering that memoryholing heretic books is a current major program point, they probably don't want to talk about memory holes in an insufficiently worshipful context, either.
