Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Opera have pledged their support for a new initiative under the Linux Foundation called the "Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers" development fund.
The fund aims to promote open development within the Chromium project. It is vital for the future of the web that Chromium's development moves beyond being predominantly funded by Google, fostering diverse contributions, enhancing trust, and reducing dependency on a single organization to

ensure the web's long-term stability and longevity.
The precise funding commitments from each organization are yet to be disclosed, but considering the high costs of Chromium development, we hope they are of a meaningful scale.

@toxy @owa monoculture breeds disease. We need M04R BROWSER ENGINES.
I do agree that google shouldn't own chromium though.

@gaffen Chromium has been dead to me for years. IMHO there's no reason to save it.

@AlgoCompSynth unfortunately as a web dev there are an alarming number of websites out there that... Simply don't work in gecko π. As I work for an agency some of them are built by me, which makes me sad lol.
That's an indictment, not endorsement, of chromium though.

@gaffen Browsers need to be discarded and replaced by something simple and modular like the "Unix" command line / shell.

@gaffen We have game engines for writing games; why does a browser need to be able to run games? We have digital audio workstations for music production; why does a browser need MIDI and audio APIs? Etc., etc., etc.!

@AlgoCompSynth my dream is to shift to a modular browser model. Pick your js implementation, your Dom implementation, your CSS feature set. It'd break half the web but that's why I want it to happen.

@gaffen I would go one further. The web does not need to be Turing complete, nor does it need to support e-commerce. That is why we have operating systems, relational databases and GUI clients.
All of that existed and worked via TCP/IP before Java, JavaScript, and Windows 95! Those are what you get when capitalists co-opt a public good like the World Wide Web and the visions of Tim Berners-Lee, Ted Nelson and Vannevar Bush.
