Biden's child tax benefit was a temporary COVID response measure.

In Canada, child tax benefits have been a permanent thing for years.

The rollout of low cost childcare across Canada would have happened much sooner had Tom Mulcair & the NDP won the 2015 election instead of Justin Trudeau and the Liberals. Nevertheless, no such thing exists in the US.

Poillievre speaks of the higher GDP per capita in the US than Canada. That is true.

However it is a question of how that GDP is distributed between residents of the two countries, and the distribution in Canada is much better (even though it is far from perfect).

@leftylabourtech

Is Poilievre making noises like he wants Canada to be the 51st state?

@northernlights He is certainly making noises that he wants to introduce Trumpian policies.

Rather than sucking up to Trump, I think any potential leadership aspirant in this country should be advocating moving us as far away from US policies as humanly possible.

I think Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum has the right idea.

@northernlights What's instructive (if you have a barf bag nearby) is watching his year end interview with right-wing nutjob Jordan Peterson.

Piss Pants (as I call him) outlines what he plans to do pretty clearly.

@leftylabourtech

Ugh, I don't have the stomach for it (loathe both of them). I've been reading reports about it instead.

The interview happened before Trump's new plans for us came out, though, so I've been wondering about PP's response to Trump's idea of a merger.

It wouldn't surprise me if he were to prove a traitor.

@northernlights He has rhetorically opposed Trump's 51st state b.s., while advocating that Canada adopt Trumpian policies.

@northernlights I would not want Trumpian policies wrapped in a maple leaf flag.

Nor do I want to see more of the neo-liberal status quo that in my view, has led to the rise of this b.s.

IMHO, we need a radical shift to the left, towards policies that actually deal with the housing crisis and growing income inequality, not to forget actually dealing with climate change.

@leftylabourtech

Agreed.

It's been a sad perception on my part that even the NDP and the Greens have been adopting neoliberal economic policies. I'm not seeing many viable and socialist options.

Plus, with major media oulets in Canada owned by a right-wing American billionaire (Post), I'm thinking it will take a lot of work to make progressive policies part of the debate.

@northernlights I agree with you on that. But in the short term, the NDP and the Greens are the best immediate electoral options.

Long term....we need a "something else". :)

And hope you stay warm! :)
