Toot

Written by Mikaela Caron 🦄 on 2025-01-10 at 05:48

One productive day, then followed by like 3 unproductive ones 🫨🫨

Why’s it like this?

What do you do to find motivation to be productive again?

@mikaelacaron perspective: 3 unproductive days followed by a productive one. The unproductive days were preparation in disguise. 🥸

@mikaelacaron Having very clear, actionable tasks to do. Otherwise my brain will decide what to do without me and before I know it I’m procrastinating again 😂

@mikaelacaron I look over the project and try to find the most fun/interesting aspect. Even if it isn’t directly related to what I’m “supposed” to be doing. I give myself an hour to just play around. Then I see if I can return to the unfun stuff.

@mikaelacaron @mattiem I have a similar brain hack that is “do the smallest useful thing” on that project, which might be a tiny bug fix or optimization, but it can help get me unstuck.

@dgregor79 @mikaelacaron sometimes I do this:

"you're just going to look at the problem. Just open the project and look. No typing all."

30 seconds later, I'm working on it.

@mikaelacaron way easier to give this advice than take it, but motivation is not something you can conjure. Showing up, despite motivation, is what becomes productive.

@mikaelacaron One reason, I think, is that we’re not machines so progress is rarely linear.

And during those days you classify as unproductive, your brain is probably churning on things in the background that help set up your next highly-productive day.

I find real deadlines to be a great motivator. (Not self-imposed ones, I am never fooled by those.)

@mikaelacaron That’s how this week started. Two days of absolutely nothing. Then I did that workout and took an entire day to do something else and the last two days have been very productive. The app is thisclose to send to testers, so that’s the goal for next week and start that last stuff (screen shots, wording, privacy statements)

@mikaelacaron This was someone else’s insight (don’t recall who!) that I’ve put to use many times:

If I’m reaching the end of the day, knowing exactly how to wrap up what I’m working on, instead of pushing to finish it then, as I always want to do, I save it for the next morning.

That way, I can start the next day without hesitation, kind of excited to wrap up. And by the time I’ve done that, I have mojo for the next thing.
