Anyone saying texting/email & Facebook/other social media are the same in terms of communication, it’s trivial to move between them & if you don’t think so, you’re just lazy is stupid.

Texting, even with group texts, is directed. It’s not the place where you idly talk about the bird you saw. In texts, you say thing you know/assume are of interest to the other person/people.

Facebook et al are not that, and acting as if they are is at best, ignorant. Massively, almost deliberately ignorant.

Also, shaming people because FB is their primary way for staying in contact with people is shitty.

You spend all day on mastodon and texting people Chad, and you get annoyed when people text you too much, expect you to respond “too fast” while being a pissbaby if they don’t respond to your texts fast enough.

Maybe stop being such a self-centered cunt about it.

it all went to hell when AIM died. The status messages were the best

@bynkii Maaaan I miss status messages. Probably one of my favorite things in Slack except that I can’t set them globally (ie across all slacks)

I mean, Apple is kinda on the right track with “Focus” but I want something that just lets other people I’m not available so they can go “oh hey, I’ll hold off on sending a message” or at least send it as a “hey, no urgency but when you’re available…”

@Wraithe it’s not the same as having the current iTunes track as your status message though

@Wraithe and ichat was scriptable on a terrifying level. It may have been the pinnacle of an Apple app in terms of scriptability.

@bynkii Yeah iChat (for its various flaws) was peak in a lotta ways, it was Apple supporting all these services without making you take The One True (Apple) Path.

@Wraithe I mean, you could write scripts that responded to incoming messages from a specific person. Like the capability was wild

@bynkii What they took from us…

“They” being Apple, ofc.

@Wraithe and AOL and the others. The service existed outside of Apple, but again, paying for it 🤷

@bynkii My wife and I were discussing this last night. If we leave Facebook we lose long distance relationships that are otherwise unmaintainable. Far flung family and friends that aren’t tech savvy. Plus many local communities/groups because there isn’t yet a viable alternative with an at-scale consensus.

This is far from a simple problem. I think it would take a superior alternative commercial offering that wasn’t enshitified. And the profit model for something like that is… maybe nil?

@rmogull that’s the core problem. Replicating the technical stuff is easy in the “the work’s already been done, how do you want to implement it” sense.

It’s paying for it that’s the hard part. Subscriptions barely work and only on the smallest of scales. For all the “I’d pay for ” noise, when given the chance, people just don’t.

@bynkii @rmogull There's also the issue—which Fedinerds assiduously avoid—that even the most perfectly tuned, exquisitely coded Facebook, Twitter, Insta, Reddit, etc replacement don't mean jack if the people I want to interact with aren't using it. And I have zero chance of convincing my local neighborhood group to switch to bloody Friendica or whatever.
