I know Zuck et al count on us not leaving major social media platforms for fear of social isolation, but the fear is at least partly based in fact--IG is the only place to keep up with all the runners I admire, runners I'm friends with, and local in-person running events. how much more social isolation can I accept while at the same time how much more can I accept this threat being used against me? #othernetworks

Toot

ok, apparently I need to actually say more explicitly: this should not have to be an individual burden we each have to bear. we should not have to individually choose to "be the change" and cut ourselves off from one of the only or very few ways to belong to a community in this glorious day and age. regulation, "my dudes."

@rose_alibi @loriemerson I’ve not commented because I know everyone’s equation on this is different.

Just because I’m able to let go of whatever communities I was in on FB/Twitter, doesn’t mean everyone there, or on IG, or WhatsApp, or whatever, can – especially so for well-established communities.

The fact there might be alts like Masto, or Pixelfed, or anything else in the Fediverse, doesn’t mean communities can move — how on earth do you coordinate the movement of a whole community?!

@europlus @rose_alibi very true! I've already left twitter and facebook and after that there are only a one or two options left for online communities that aren't Mastodon etc. again, I really think there's only such much that individuals can do individually

@loriemerson @rose_alibi after typing the above, and thinking further, I thought of all the loose and strong ties the individuals in those “communities” also have - to individuals and to other communities…😵‍💫

Fat chance getting true migration en masse from FB, IG, Twitter, etc.

Fragmentation serves nobody, but without an actual service shutdown, it’s the best we can expect.

@europlus @loriemerson @rose_alibi I have somehow managed to be extremely online without anything from meta or apple or LinkedIn or xitter or whatever. I feel like I've turned FOMO into FOBI (fear of being included)
