Toot

Written by Pete on 2025-01-08 at 21:12

My evening ride, (brought to you in association with Ice Spiker Pro tyres and Wolvhammer winter boots) went to shit as my dropper post failed not 2km from home: I think the actuator froze. #cycling

@pete Great photo. Did your dropper post fail after you'd only ridden 2 km, or on the way home after a longer ride?

@jgrg Just heading out. Saddle felt a little low so wondered if it was partially dropped. Pushed the lever and it raised a tad but then wouldn’t stay up. It actually got worse in that I then wondered if I could just raise the seat post and clamp it higher, but the clamp bolt has a nut that came loose when I loosened it and rolled off into the undergrowth, lost. Just one of those rides!

@pete I don’t even know what an actuator is :-)

@Documentally It’s the nobbly bit on the bottom of a dropper post that the cable attaches to. Now warmed up and working again. I’m not sure what it is, but this winter seems to have been very harsh on bike components. Perpetual dampness perhaps.

@pete Penny farthing with winter tyres? Less moving parts. No, idea where you'd put a water bottle though.

@Documentally Ah, it'd only freeze. I'll do without.

Talking of freezing and having just followed your newsletter link, I've got one of those 'Chinese Diesel Heaters' as they're ubiquitously known and it's ace.
