I simply can't understand why a family saloon car needs to be capable of 160km per hour. We need to adopt an EU wide set of speed limits and vehicles should only be capable of the limit and not a km more.

That isn’t always safe.
Especially if you cannot guarantee 100% compliance.
Luckily The EU is not a stranger to the notion of mass transit.

It works though.
The Netherlands has highway speed cameras close to cities, where the speed limit is 100kph. The cameras flash at 101kph. You get the notice by snail mail, all you have to do is enter your bank IBAN number and send it back -- or pay online. If you don't pay I imagine they tell your insurer.
More than 50kph over the limit, they take your driver license.
Result: Around cities, the Dutch drive exactly 100.

@CelloMomOnCars @Chancerubbage vehicle manufacturers have the technology to limit speeds and there is zero need for a vehicle to have a maximum speed of 250 kph. If all vehicles were unable to travel faster then the speed limit, there would be no need for any speed cameras.

They sell a box on wheels that gets you from A to B, but they market the idea that you too could be Max Verstappen.
For instance: That whole talk about "handling" is racing talk.
