My house is nearly 140-years-old, due to be on the historic register because of the Mormon pioneer that owned it, and very tricky to work with due to the 3-wythe exterior brick walls on a sandstone foundation that surround the kitchen. We can’t make space. We can’t move any of the exterior walls (where cabinets are) due to the historic district and the house’s layout on the plot. We are stuck with the square footage allotted us. When we bought the house, there was a huge refrigerator blocking the main walkway between the two house halves and cheap builder-grade cabinets ill-suited to work with a very limited square footage available. It was horrible. I honestly don’t think there ever was a good spot for a fridge. The house was built in an era where you had an under-ground icebox and cold store after all. Heck, this house was built before residential electricity! (3/11)

We bought our single-bathroom home way under market value in 2020 precisely because of horribly dated plumbing (which we’ve fixed), a terrible bathroom (which we’ve fixed) and a no-good, very-bad kitchen that most were too scared to deal with. But we had a plan. (4/11)

After much research (and budgeting), we went German. Everything. German cabinets and German appliances to save ourselves precious inches not afforded by “U.S. dimension” cabinets and appliances as German ones are 2.5” shallower. We worked with FORM Kitchens and Nobilia to engineer cabinets that (a) fit, (b) make use of every square inch of space for storage, and (c) match the ultra-premium aesthetic we wanted for a remodel this major. It’s still a work in progress, when it’s done it’ll still be “tight” and necessarily compromised in some places, but we are finally going to have a good kitchen. No, a great kitchen. Probably the first great kitchen this house has ever seen in nearly 140-years. (6/11)

Our neighborhood has become one of the most desirable zip codes in Utah over the past several years for the many moving to Salt Lake from California/Oregon/Colorado/New York. It’s mostly single-family homes, but lot sizes are tiny and population density is high which means unlike most of suburban America, there’s neighborhood coffee shops, restaurants, and markets all within a quick walk away. There’s also a bus line a 30-second walk from my front door and a light rail train just a few minutes further. Incredible sidewalks and parks (also a historic cemetery) make driving an option—not a requirement—and the houses are gorgeously architected from an era where craftsmanship and quality materials was the standard—not a luxury. This place is special. People want to live here, badly, and home prices reflect that. (8/11)

The market value of our house has gone up nearly 40% since we bought (ignoring our renovations) and I’ve had the opportunity to visit dozens of houses in the neighborhood. I’m confident ours will be in the top 10% of layout, design, and materials quality (it was already architecturally notable enough to be published in a book about the neighborhood) which should extend the value even further. This isn’t our forever house, but I hope we can afford to own this house forever. If we can’t, I can at least look back at the work we’ve done to make it more in line with its historic heritage while making it more functional for the modern day. And then I’ll add our name to the list of many families that has owned, worked on, and lived in this house since 1892. (11/11)

@snazzyq my wife and I are just finishing our big kitchen (among other things) remodel and are in a similar position in Yalecrest, though it’s a little easier to deal with the historic society here. I hope you got that sweet sweet tax credit! And while my home is only 100 years old, nothing beats these old homes in salt lake. I love them.
