I agree with this outlook on gaming. In fact, as someone who was a console-only gamer for my entire life, I finally started "PC" gaming using an Asus ROG Ally X (thought about a Steam Deck, but this let's me easily use my Game Pass on my XBox and my portable PC). The experience isn't quite as smooth (it's just Windows), but just took a little adjustment. https://www.polygon.com/gaming/500266/pc-gaming-mainstream-console-comparison-2025

@remotesynth I got a PS5 on launch day, having previously had a self-build PC (in 2013). I’m planning on going self-build again as soon as the PS5 starts running out of steam.
The Steam Deck changed the game entirely. The PC, as a platform, is in such a good place.

@katiefenn I've had every console pretty much, but the purchases were largely driven by console exclusives, which, as the article states, are disappearing.

@remotesynth Yeah. I couldn’t miss Gran Turismo 7, so naturally I had to have a PS5, but that ended up being the only exclusive.
Also, the boom in small form factor hardware has made it much easier to own a PC, because I like to play games either in my living room (in the summer) or in bed (in the winter). Much easier to do now that you don’t have to think about where to lug a full tower.
(I tried Steam remote play, but unreliability just ended up annoying me)

@remotesynth The Steam Deck has allowed me to play PC games again. I'm working through the back log of games I purchased on Steam but never got a chance to play because they weren't playable on MacOS. Actually, I should post about the game I finished last night.

@macdonst you should! I'm looking forward to seeing how my Asus holds up on a long travel I have this week. How well it plays offline and on hotel internet.

@remotesynth If there is a device made (phone, laptop, handheld game) that works well on hotel internet I'm yet to find it.
