“The energy transition is a slogan but not a scientific concept,” explains [French historian Jean-Baptiste] Fressoz. “It derives its legitimacy from a false representation of history. Industrial revolutions are certainly not energy transitions, they are a massive expansion of all kinds of raw materials and energy sources.”

Well yeah, "energy transition" is a political statement of what we want to achieve, not a postulate about how the world is. I don't know why that's supposed to be a burn?
Apart from that, I don't see any scientific reason to believe that it CAN'T be achieved, which gives me some moderate amount of hope in these trying times.

@notsoloud What about the reasons listed in the article?

It's been some days since I read it, but as I recall it's mainly about historical precedent.
Can you spot the difference between now and previous historic transitions?

@notsoloud No, what's the difference?

We're not doing this transition to open a new source of energy, we're doing it to get away from the old one.

@notsoloud How can you be sure? Who decides why we're doing this transition?

Very good point. A lot of people are doing lots of things for lots of different reasons.
One reason for many people/governments is to stop carbon emissions. I'm not saying it's the main reason or that it will be enough, but it's a significant difference, and that's cause for hope.
We have already seen the renewables lobby starting to match the power of the fossil lobby, which must eventually decline with revenue. I think we're just about at maximum resistance now.

A lot of people doing lots of things for lots of different reasons is precisely why it will not be a "transition", but rather an "addition".
Billions of existing machines (cars, excavators, planes, ships, etc.) powered by fossil fuels are capital (wealth) that noone will abandon just like that.
Any country with access to fossil reserves will extract them to enrich themselves. That applies to rich countries like the US just the same as to poor ones like Guyana.

Even countries that presumably are undergoing the energy transition prioritize economic growth and energy security, undercutting their attempts to lower emissions.
There are hardly any examples of countries or even regions successfully undergoing the energy transition. Unfortunately, to limit warming we'd need an overwhelming majority to go through it, not just a few.

Most of the "laws of nature". Most of the reasons people say we will, seem based on entitlement and certinaly they don't scale. Ecars being but one laughable example (that's not a push for ICE cars they're even more malodious), or Nuclear another foolish stupidity.

I'm not watching 18 video episodes. I'm sure they're great, but no thanks.
