What us this midieval looking platform at the bottom of my chimney? Can i remove it? Replace it with something built in the last 100 years? #diy #homerepair

@tito_swineflu Retaining plate for the tee cap. Must be removable. Yours looks misaligned (bent strut?) and not doing its job, the cap looks open. Definitely should be repaired.

@yngmar Thanks! The hilarious part of this is that the chimney pipe is no more than 40 years old, but that retaining plate looks like it's from 1910 or something. I assume this is to provide access for cleaning somehow?

@tito_swineflu Chimneys are either swept from above or from below. In either case the dirt falls down and lands in this tee-piece, which should have a an end cap (which I can't see).

The retainer is then removed, the cap opened and the soot collected in a container.

The cap alone may fall off, hence the retainer. The pipe is galvanized, the retainer isn't, so one rusted while the other did not.

Make sure the bottom is closed before use!
