Finished my first book for 2025. Peter Frankopan's huge history of nearly everything, tries to put the environment into history and seek evidence for its effects. Did the Roman Empire fail due to climate change, for example?
For the first half I thought the "untold history" was the story of women. Women get more of the story in more recent times, but I think it is a failure not to have mentioned their labour and innovations in textiles for example.
As a whole it is a depressing story of lessons we failed to learn. How we thought we could control nature. How we might just put together a last minute sensible lifestyle, but " a historian wouldn't bet on it'.
