I noticed that the co-founder of my alma mater, the Savannah College of Art and Design, Paula Wallace, is getting a Presidential Citizens Medal. If people knew just what she put faculty, staff, and especially students through back in the ‘90s I’m pretty sure she’d be in prison, not at the White House.

“The administration's resistance to a proposed student constitution in the spring set in motion a tumultuous series of events that brought many of the questions about the school into the open.… officials, citing a small explosive device found near an administration building on April 6, tried to stop leaders of the student movement from enrolling unless they signed legal documents prepared by the college. A second pipe bomb forced the cancellation of graduation.”

I also had to sign an agreement that I’d drop my efforts to start a representative student government in order to be allowed to finish my education there. Distasteful, but when you’ve sunk three years and tens of thousands of dollars into a degree, what else can you do. Almost all of us signed. #SCAD
