How many ballots will it take to elect a new Speaker of the House on 3 Jan 2025? (My guess in responses.)

If the GOP were any ordinary party, I’d say only one ballot, everyone voting in lockstep. But there are just enough Republicans who dislike him to deny Mike Johnson a majority on the first ballot. I suspect there will be 2-4 ballots.
Also, the rules have changed so that the House needs at least 9 members of the Speaker’s party to make a motion to oust the Speaker. My guess is that Johnson will lose at least one of the ballots by 9 or more votes; that way the fringe members can send the message: “we put you in, we can take you out if you don’t do what we want”.

@jdeisenberg Maybe I’m too cynical but I read that and think, if you marginalize the nine you just give the tenth person who joins them the power to hold everybody hostage and so on until eventually you just wind up with a parliament.
