[#]German #programmers: if you are writing a #Java program with variable names in German, do you capitalize the first letter (even though that goes against convention)? z.B.
double Gewicht; // oder
double gewicht;
[Edit: a bit later, having downloaded a set of solutions for a Java programming book (https://www.grundkurs-java.de/index.php), it appears they follow convention and use lower case for first letter of variables and upper case for names of Java classes.]

The Deutsches Museum in Munich removed a portrait of Elon Musk: https://www.bild.de/politik/inland/deutsches-museum-haengt-elon-musk-portraet-ab-678f5be15808b878aecd157b
If I read the text correctly, they commented that it can always be problematic to honor a living person at such a prominent place in an exhibition - it can be seen as uncritical appreciation.

Definitely not a #cult.

I’m making a blog of my experiences in #Graz, #Austria. When I want to indicate that a linked site is in German, should I display the German flag emoji (which most people recognize) or the Austrian flag emoji?

Somewhere I saw a link to a #pixelfed instance with #lgbt in its name, but I can’t figure out where I saw (or saved) the info. Would anyone happen to know the URL for the instance? [Edit: clarified last sentence, as I am sure nobody would know where I saw or saved the info :) ]

It would be nice if the dialogs that ask you to enter the 6-digit security code sent to your phone would focus() on the input field. #HTMLannoyances

Watching Law & Order SVU in German, and the voice of the “these are their stories“ guy is a perfect match to the US narrator. In fact, all the voices are pretty much spot on. The current episode has Wallace Shawn as a guest star, and I am wondering if they will get his very distinctive voice right.

Does “politics stops at the water’s edge” (don’t disagree with US policy when outside its borders) apply to private citizens? [I can see why one might want it to apply to government officials or people in positions of authority.]

So, in his remarks, Johnson repeats “Thomas Jefferson’s Prayer for the nation“. Except, of course, that it isn’t.

If the GOP were any ordinary party, I’d say only one ballot, everyone voting in lockstep. But there are just enough Republicans who dislike him to deny Mike Johnson a majority on the first ballot. I suspect there will be 2-4 ballots.
Also, the rules have changed so that the House needs at least 9 members of the Speaker’s party to make a motion to oust the Speaker. My guess is that Johnson will lose at least one of the ballots by 9 or more votes; that way the fringe members can send the message: “we put you in, we can take you out if you don’t do what we want”.

How many ballots will it take to elect a new Speaker of the House on 3 Jan 2025? (My guess in responses.)
