Ancestors

This afternoon, I'm going through a collection of backup DVD's I made in the mid-2000's to copy the things I don't have, ironically enough, back to hard drives before I lose the ability to read these disks.

Part of this collection includes a bunch of lossless recordings I made throughout college which, to my surprise, I had enough foresight to back up, and for years I thought they had been lost. So thank you, past Steve.

@sclower Obligatory message to see if you have old A T history items in that collection, manuals, tutorials, podcasts, etc.

@Jage Nothing that people don't already have posted online. I posted a dump of early Main Menu shows up through the end of 2008 which made the rounds a year or so back. I also have the entire Window-Eyes audio archive from the GW Micro website before that was all pulled. I can send links to either one if you like.

@sclower Do you have the earliest main menus which were missing for the longest time?

@Jage Yes. ACB never backed them up, and a couple files I have seem to have been corrupted. But nearly everything's in tact.

@sclower Oh that's quite cool. I figured that someone must have had them. Maybe from archive.org it'd be easy enough to get the show notes and such.

I think someone posted my Main Menu dump on archive.org if you prefer to grab the files from there.

@sclower @Jage If it's 5.5G in size, then yes, someone uploaded it to archive.org:

@sclower @twynn That GW Mico stuff is cool though. I have quite a few of the tutorials which are not in this folder, but didn't have any of this. Guess What, that certainly takes me back.

@Jage @masonasons @twynn Thank you. Hard to believe it's been over 10 years since I hauled all my audio equipment to the office to redo all those sections for the final 9.0 tutorial.

@sclower @Jage @twynn hard to believe it's been about 7 since Vispero decided Window-Eyes was window-cries and killed it

@masonasons @Jage @twynn Indeed. I have many thoughts about that whole process. Just glad I was out before it happened.

@sclower @masonasons @twynn Regardless of what went down then and looking back, it was probably an OK time to get out of the screen reader business, with the rise of NVDA and eventually Narrator.

@Jage @sclower @masonasons @twynn I always assumed that Vispero bought AI Squared so that they could acquire Zoomtext to replace it with MAGic. I don't think that killing Window-eyes was the real goal in that acquisition but Window-Eyes was in the line of fire since there was no way that Vispero would support the development of a second screen reader along with JAWS. I hope there will come a time when those who were involved in those buyouts might eventually come forward but it's not likely to happen.
