Dear #lazyweb - Are there any services our there that 3d print (or otherwise) small one off jobs?
I have bought a model of the train that was named after my dad and I want to have it customised to look like the real thing. So I'll want two name plates making (one correctly spelled, one incorrectly).

I know the square root of bugger all about 3D printing, and have the CAD skills of a drunken hamster

@markkirschstein I can't print things that small, you probably need a resin printer for that, but I spent 10mins making a model that could be printed if that's useful. I couldn't see all of the date so that might be wrong and I didn't tune the spacing or font very much but the model is parametric so tweaks are really easy

@fastness amazing, thank you so much.
It was 2021 when he died if you could make that tweak please. I'm sure I can find an online service that takes files to be printed easily enough

@markkirschstein You're very welcome and the date change is already done, I set it up to be easy to change anything I thought you might need
I can send you the STL files for printing and the CAD source file now but it might be better to work out the exact sizes (in mm) you need first because it's easier to make them the right size rather than scaling them. I've had a look at a rough scale based on the train you linked but it would be better to get it right. Updating the model takes seconds

@fastness with a ruler, the model and references photots I'm going to go with roughly 2.5cm x 0.5cm

@markkirschstein
The bigger one of these is 2.5cm long with the width tweaked to look like the proportions in the photo
I can DM you a link to a Google Drive folder with the files if you want, or I can email them or something else - let me know what you'd rather do. I can also show you how to edit the model directly to make your own versions if that will help :)

@fastness you are far too kind internet stranger!
A DM to the google drive would be great, what software did you use? I can have a muck about with that if it needs tweaking but by the sounds of it this is spot on what I need to send to an online service

@markkirschstein I built this with OpenSCAD because it's what I'm fastest with - it's free & open source and you can get it here: https://openscad.org/downloads.html
I like it but it can be a little love it or hate it since it's script based :)
In OpenSCAD you would open the *.scad file and then F5 or the Preview button will make a quickish check, F6 or the render button will build the final model which you can save. I've tried to make the parameters reasonably clear but do ask if you need to

@fastness @markkirschstein If a GUI would help you, it's possible to open #openscad files in #freecad https://www.freecad.org/ (that one is open source too)

@markkirschstein This is about 18mm long, about 3mm wide, & 0.5mm high which is probably not right but might be close enough either to scale or to tweak. More train-adjacent people than I might be able to advise if the right size will look right or not (I know sometimes things that are correct can look weird at scale)
Depending on pricing it might also be possible to make a few at different sizes - this is very, very easy to set up
