The most Swiss thing I can think of is that we clean our tunnels. Apparently, we have been cleaning our tunnels for over 50 years. Supposedly, it's done for safety (clean means bright and bright is safer than dark), but the real reason is that we feel that clean tunnels are just better than dirty tunnels.

Cleaning off the car dirt from the walls for sure protects the material. Look at the erosion of some Buildings close to the street in cities like Rome or Paris, Berlin or London.
When there is much traffic along buildings they erode. Even worse in a tunnel with less ventilation than open streets.

@populistensohn @reichenstein only UK tunnel cleaning I can think of is the ‘fluffers’ on the London Underground. I don’t have a lot of experience of road tunnels, not being a regular driver. I’d be surprised if the national rail tunnels were cleaned. Most of them will not be ‘finished’ inside so they don’t lend themselves to cleaning.
