The Y2K panic of the 1990s reads as a punchline today, but for those of us who lived through it, it was serious enough. In retrospect it's easy to forget that we just did not know. The world dodged the bullet because companies and governments spent $100 billion remediating — the largest tech infrastructure project ever at that time. The sudden cessation of that spending contributed to the tech bust early in this century.
