Gonna listen to the Dark is Rising, the BBC adaptation from 2022, over the next few days.

@westerling excellent idea: I might join you! BBC full-cast radio dramas are the best thing in the world! I still have my cherished tape copies of the 1975 The Lost World and the 1981 The Chrysalids; and The Lord of the Rings was a masterpiece! Not to mention The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy; good grief: the list just goes on and on :)

@masp

I have very fond memories of listening Hitchhiker's with my parents, back in the 80s. They have it on cassette still, I think.

@westerling I was in secondary school when the Lord of the Rings was broadcast, and EVERYBODY was listening to it. Cries of “Knob!” echoed around the courtyard for weeks after the Bree episode :)

@masp

Somebody else mentioned that the other day but I haven't listened to it. Sounds like it's worth tracking down.

Descendants

@westerling it’s my favorite audio drama, and the best dramatization of LOTR ever: brilliantly adapted by Brian Sibley, and an incredible cast with some of my favorite actors: including Ian Holm as Frodo, Bill Nighy as Sam and Michael Hordern as Gandalf: although for me the standout performance is Robert Stephens’ Aragorn. And it ends with The Scouring of the Shire, which was inexplicably skipped in the Peter Jackson movies, and still brings a tear to my eye whenever I hear it (or read it).
