Toot

Hey chat.

So I've been out of the "free downloads of software and multimedia" game for a while. Yarr, but I pine for the open sea.

What are the current good sources for torrents, streams, and so forth?

What's the best VPN for the dollar spent?

How do I keep Windows from snitching, aka sending usage data back to MS? I don't mind giving this up and going straight to Mint on the new laptop, but everything works for now and I'd rather not bother with tinkering just yet. I know, blasphemous.

Help? Thanks in advance. #streaming #vpn #tpb

@Crow I use 2 semi private torrent sites for my multimedia needs - the only downside is the need to keep torrents seeding for a period of time after downloading and needing to maintain a certain ratio of upload/download. But they both have 'freeleech' torrents that are good for building a ratio buffer up. I'd be happy to offer an invite to one of them if you're interested

Once you start downloading stuff - I'd find a few release groups where you like the quality vs filesize and tend to grab from them first (my favourite for movies/TV is d3g with their bluray rips)

@Crow i use

https://yts.mx for movies

soulseek p2p for music (nicotine client on linux)

https://www.1337x.to for general torrenting (series, fitgirl game releases are good)

also: if you go to a free operating system, you gain autonomy. you'll no longer be subject to microsofts agenda and their impositions. present and future ones. your computer will be yours, under your control, doing what you want.

@zeh @Crow these are awesome recs.

I’ll only add, you don’t need to use a website. You should probably be using QBitTorrent for your client. It has a search plugin that searches trackers for you. So you just search from within the torrent client. Very convenient.

@Crow

🏴‍☠️ I don't use Windows, so I don't have any good answers there, but I have a Transmission server running for years now, maybe decades. I don't use a VPN, and I do get occasional nasty-grams from Comcast, but mostly I just keep an eye out so I don't get too many of the things that get flagged in a row. (HBO shows on a public torrent server is an obvious one.)

Also, since I got onto a private tracker, I rarely see any issues other than trying to share enough to keep a decent ratio.

I'm always happy to share knowledge, feel free to ask more if there's other questions!

@LexPendragon right on, thanks. Gonna dualboot mint or something, see how it goes. Should be switching over, I think. Transmission makes things easy.

@Crow It does!

I also use a GUI (https://sourceforge.net/projects/transgui/ ) with it and Flexget (https://flexget.com/ )
