Toot

The day I have been grieving months in advance finally happened. On Christmas Eve, I had to take Gus to the emergency vet to put him down. My sister and my mom drove in from out of town to support me, and it was indescribably helpful. I miss him, yet I’m relieved he’s no longer in a body that doesn’t feel good.

He was such a good dog.

@Morning1 I'm so sorry, I had to put down my sweet Maddy several years ago and I still mourn and miss her. But also I remember fondly all the wonderful experiences with her.

@GPJohnston Thank you. And I’m sorry for your loss too. I’m glad I have a lot of pics and videos of him saved on my phone for that reason. 🙂

@Morning1 So sorry. I'd been dealing with the same and thought about your situation whenever you mentioned Gus. My pug Rosie has been gone for about 6 weeks now and I catch myself looking towards where she would be once or twice every day. It's also been sort of a relief not having to think about what had been looming for months. They will always be missed.

@firephoto thank you. 🙏🏼 I know what you mean. I also recently looked at the end of the couch where he’d usually rest and realized he’s not there.

And I’m so sorry too. 6 weeks isn’t very much time, so I imagine it’s still really sad.

@Morning1 Thanks. Those little instinctual things we do take some time to fade away. It gets better but it's a little hard at times looking through the old pictures and running across the things of the past. Good memories and sad memories.

@firephoto definitely. I started researching grief a few months ago because I was crying most nights at the thought of losing him.

It took a weight off my shoulders to be reminded it’s a universal human experience, and we can/will get through it.

@Morning1 Probably the hardest thing for me was that I think this is the first time in my life there hasn't been a dog around and I had that though many months ago. It's this strange emptiness or calm of sorts when you've been doing dog things multiple times most days for years and then it all stops. I'm not really sad about it now, it's just different without a dog.
