This Verge article has an interesting, if unexpected take: just ban TP-Link routers altogether.

There's a lot of angles to this, but in this case, I think there's actually a better solution: just make a rule that says routers must ship with open source firmware.

Do all the other companies while they're at it, too. I'm so tired of hearing about routers with security vulnerabilities.

@PKL The main problem with this ban is that it's not just TP-Link products that are the problem, yet for some reason, TP-Link seems to be taking the majority of the heat. Many other brands of routers are affected by these same exact issues, yet there's no talk of banning them, only TP-Link.

@gcvsa Maybe there ought to be a "tariff" of $1 sent to OpenWRT for every router imported into the US (and I hope Industry Canada is listening, too).

Make it $2 if it isn't on the supported hardware list yet. And $10 if the radio comes with a firmware blob.
