Funny thing. So I bought 2x 16" IKEA BILLY and finally got around to setting them up.

IKEA said in the showroom I could connect them together (not as an angled corner) if I wanted, but their site doesn't have an entry for the hardware.

There are parts, but they've gained mythical status, requiring finding the only official mention (on the NL site), a Reddit post reply, or a blog post! (linked in reply)

After getting them via the small spare parts form, you must drill a new hole to install.

I'm not gonna order the parts. I'll just attach them to studs with the included anti-tip hardware and call it good.

There is another solution they don't mention, but it should be possible to connect them via the pin holes they leave on top for adding additional shelving units atop the existing one.

Just put a flat bar across with two holes in it and wedge the two leftover wooden pins through the bar into the holes. Friction fit. Probably could 3D print the bar, too.

@asmcbain are they shaped such that you can’t just put a screw in one side of the interior and into the others wall? That’s how BESTA are connected in a row and it’s really solid tbh

@halcy You probably can, their solution potentially avoids tearout. These are just particleboard after all.

They have us drill out one of the holes used for putting a shelf wherever we want then putting in a screw sleeve and a screw into that from the other side.

There's also this person on Etsy who has an interesting solution that doesn't involve any drilling, so long as you bought a solid color shelf: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1798630221/connector-for-ikea-billy-bookcase?show_sold_out_detail=1&ref=nla_listing_details

(I doubt it'd hide well against the walnut veneer ones I got.)

@asmcbain honestly, with some fake bolts and on the other corners as well, and a coat of metallic paint, that’d probably look kind of neat

@halcy Probably, yeah. metal construction aesthetic.

My original purpose in all this is that I keep supporting Girl Genius and Atomic Robo, who haven't stopped putting out books...

and my existing shelves have the same issue as the BILLYs: required fixed-support shelves to prevent rhombusing that make it difficult to have enough tall book-accommodating shelves except at the top and bottom.

So instead of just buying less books, I got two short-width BILLYs (to allow separate adjustment). 😅
