Computer users haven't become deskilled. Computer use has become more common.
There are still as many highly skilled computer users as there were in any previous generation. It's just that in previous generations there was such a thing as a non-computer user, and now every single human is also a computer user.

Among every sort of enthusiast there are those who think it's a moral failing that the general public don't want to be expert in their particular thing. There are music people who think everyone should practise violin an hour a day, car people who think everyone should know how to drive at a high level, gun people, logistics people, cooking people, and many others.
I once had a conversation with a skiing enthusiast who asked me if I like to ski.
"Not really," I replied.
"Well, you're wrong," she said.
Computer people aren't different in this regard. Most of us understand that most people don't give a shit about how computers work. Some of us get offended by that, and tell people they're wrong.

@passenger My specific axe to grind is the "everyone should learn how to code" bit, which is like saying everyone should be a copywriter.
It's a specialized skill set, it's not for everyone, and I don't wanna (more than the occasional, very simple thingy).

Oh yeah.
I mean, everyone should be given the opportunity to code, I absolutely believe that. I'm not a Dijkstra guy. We should all be able to write our little hello worlds if we want to, or write macros in Excel to automate the boring part of our job, or stuff like that.
But that "if we want to" is crucial.

I think "everyone should learn what a program is" (i.e. a scripted sequence of actions) so that they aren't completely alien to the concept.

@passenger i think it's really healthy that the vast majority of people have zero interest in pure math because those dragons are not for everyone

Oh, same. I had to do some maths modules in undergraduate, and it made me curious about learning more maths, and holy shit your discipline is bizarre.
My discipline is the same of course. We're not special.
