[#]Cloud #hosting recommendation?
The world of cloud hosting is changing so rapidly. What I'd like is a provider where I could "one-click-install" a range of packages. For example, I'd like to try NextCloud or my own instance of PenPot. I realize not all services will provide a 1-click for EVERYTHING but I'd like one that has a robust set that would allow me to play. This does NOT need to be high performance, this is for personal exploration.

I've played with Elest.io in the past and loved it. Just curious if things have changed much recently

@scottjenson Their customer service was quite poor unfortunately, and I had data irrevocably deleted on me over a temporary billing issue. I'm back to using either Render or Digital Ocean, although the 1-click story isn't so convenient.

@gwilymgj I just tried them and they look great! I'm just having trouble creating the account it's very odd and I've had to reset my password three times and they still won't let me in. I've sent them an email and I'll just have to wait a few days to figure out what's going on but thanks for the recommendation

@scottjenson It seems like the big hosting companies (Linode, DigitalOcean, Vultr, Hetzner) are all building out a robust 1-click marketplace. Elest.io I think is a bit different because they do "managed" hosting, not just click-to-install.

@gabek I'm not sure I appreciate the differences but I like the support that comes with Elest.io. Backups, easy domain configuration, etc are really handy for more consumer-ish folks. The price doesn't appear bad and they are using the same providers (e.g. Hetzner, linode, etc)

@scottjenson I think the meaningful difference is that managed hosting will always keep the software up to date for you, where the rest it's up to you to manage it once it's installed. The same goes if there are any issues, it would be up to you to fix them. But if you are paying somebody to manage it for you, then it, in theory, will be taken care of.

@scottjenson It's not really a "1-click install" workflow, but... it's easy enough if you have a tech background: use docker.
That way you can use whatever hosting provider that have VPS. And all you have to do, is getting the docker-compose.yaml file, move it to the machine and execute "docker compose up -d", it will automatically set all dependencies to get the related service running.
Today, the chances that you don't find a docker build pour a tool is really low, compared to the 1-click marketplaces.

@NicolasConstant that's all very reasonable. But as a #UX designer I'm trying to find a way for more consumer-driven folk, clearly not technical ones, to be able to have a chance in hell at getting something like Nextcloud up and running with no more work than signing up for Dropbox. I expect it's a big ask (but gotta try)

@scottjenson I don’t think they have 1-Click installs, but fly.il is very good for really easy deployment
