@bcantrill @ahl The Twitter firehose was a subtle business issue. The customer had to be able to handle the traffic (it would saturate NICs etc), do something promptly, and thus, the customer would correspondingly have some demands. So, it was charged for. Most users of such APIs actually used a sample, which was cheap or free.
