Both my opponent and I missed the nuances of this position in a #blitz game. White to play, what should your move be? #chess

Queen c8 checkmate is soo close, so it was too tempting for me to go fxg4
However!! That runs into Qa1+ setting up a fork from the knight on e4. After all of it white is +1 instead of a winning +5
In the game Nxe4 was played without the in-between check, blundering mate in 1 for me

cc @gmmds if you have time I'm curious how obvious this is to an advanced player - the blunder I could have found with a bit of time, but calculating the correct line here is out of my depth

@nil So there are 2 patterns: the typical Dragon …Bxf3 & …Nxe4 then …Qa1+ (not a great version as White has Qa3) However it doesn’t work because of the back-rank mate pattern …Bxf3, Qc8+ mate. Black has no threat which means White has time. So attacking another piece with 1.h6 looks very natural indeed. If the bishop retreats to f8 then anything will be strong, maybe 2.Qc7. Would be seen in an instant by a strong player (assuming I’m right 😂)

@Vellingbart
h6 O-O
hxg7 Re8 threatening the queen and white's rook seems scary to me. The computer laughs at it all because black is down too much material for it to matter.
And for all of the lines you have to calculate what about Nxe4

@nil It's an interesting position. Suggesting h6 was my intutive answer. I would definitely not be able calculated the implications in a short time like in a bullet game. The rasoning is more like it gives more chanses in the next couple of moves than any other obvious move.
