Toot

If you live in a place that gets a lot of snow, and you’ve never tried snow tires because of the expense or inconvenience, or just skepticism, I’d urge you to do yourself a favor and give them a try.

I was skeptical as well, and didn’t want to deal with putting them on every winter, but I gave them a try. I’ll never stop using them in the winter now! I live on a very windy dirt road that is buried under snow and ice for at least 6 months, and with really good all-weather tires, I slip and slide if I’m not really careful… and sometimes even when I am. With snow tires, it’s actually LESS slippery than the dry dirt and gravel in the summer.

I had to drive at one point for about 35 miles, at 35 mph (in a 60 mph zone), on a road that was covered with solid ice. It was stressful and no fun, but I didn’t slide once.

If you have to drive on snow and ice with even moderate frequency in the winter, snow tires will absolutely change your life… and maybe even save your life.

@thomasareed Tire tech (siping, rubber compounds) has come a long way. I wish they’d stop selling studded tires. The studs are just destroying roads.

@jackdaniyel Yes, I agree… I didn’t mention studded vs non-studded, but I do not believe in studded snow tires. From what I have read, there’s an extremely narrow range of conditions where studded tires perform better than regular snow tires, and there’s a much wider range where they’re actually worse. For example, on bare pavement or ice below a certain temperature, the studs don’t grip well and will actually reduce the amount of rubber in contact with the surface.

Plus, they’re illegal in some places under some conditions. Where I live, they’re just completely illegal for about half the year.

@thomasareed agreed. It makes a world of difference. Here in Quebec its the law: everyone has to have their winter tires on by December 1st.
