This is your periodic reminder that if you say GIF with a hard G because it stands for “graphics”, you also must pronounce JPEG as “jay-feg” because the P stands for “photographic.”

Many things in our world are looking grim. But my son’s 9th grade English teacher just assigned a book that has been, at times, the most banned book in the US. So not everything is terrible.

My wife was the recipient of a rather nasty scam call today. Our 15-year-old son was driving, in snow, for the first time, to a school event up at the ski hill when she got the call. It was from a strange number, but she answered because she was nervous about him.
The caller sounded like he was crying, and claimed he had been in a wreck and had broken his nose. The voice could plausibly have been our son under stress and with a plugged up nose. She kept trying to ask questions, such as where he was, but got back replies that didn’t answer the questions. Those replies were engineered to ratchet up the anxiety. (These were mentions of the police coming to arrest him, among other things.)
At some point, the caller identified himself using our son’s first name. In hindsight, though, she realized that she probably said his name, though she didn’t remember doing so. (I know she did, as I heard her talking and her tone of voice and use of his name drew me out of my office to see what was going on.)
Fortunately, the caller said some things that our son would never have said, and I could see on Find My that he was safely traveling up the expected road. She repeatedly asked the caller for a last name, and eventually got one that was not correct, at which point she hung up.
It was a really terrible experience, and it took her a long time to relax, even after we knew (from Find My) that our son had arrived safely at his destination. These scammers deserve some special treatment in hell.

My son and I skied a new run today… it was bitterly cold, but very beautiful, and the sun and the exercise helped keep us warm.

As an aside, is anyone else still irritated that they named the aliens “xenomorphs?” They couldn’t think of something better to call them than “shape of an alien?” 🙄 Sounds like something one of the Wonder Twins would turn into.

I haven’t watched Aliens in a VERY long time, but just rewatched. I didn’t remember anyone’s name (other than Ripley), but when the little girl was introduced as Rebecca, I immediately thought, “That’s not Rebecca, that’s Newt!”

Watching people armchair quarterbacking and casting all kinds of aspersions during the LA wildfires, when those people know absolutely nothing about wildfire management, is extremely disappointing. If you have experience with managing wildfires, please speak up. Otherwise, keep your opinions to yourself and just support the people of LA in whatever way you can.

Vail and Park City ski patrollers and lifties are having to strike right now for a $2/hour raise and improved benefits. For reference, even with that raise, Vail employees would still be getting less than at many other big ski resorts.
It's more than a little disturbing that Vail Resorts management forced them to strike, has strike breakers currently working, and is allowing their customers to stand in hour-long lift lines due to short staffing rather than treat their employees right.

If you live in a place that gets a lot of snow, and you’ve never tried snow tires because of the expense or inconvenience, or just skepticism, I’d urge you to do yourself a favor and give them a try.
I was skeptical as well, and didn’t want to deal with putting them on every winter, but I gave them a try. I’ll never stop using them in the winter now! I live on a very windy dirt road that is buried under snow and ice for at least 6 months, and with really good all-weather tires, I slip and slide if I’m not really careful… and sometimes even when I am. With snow tires, it’s actually LESS slippery than the dry dirt and gravel in the summer.
I had to drive at one point for about 35 miles, at 35 mph (in a 60 mph zone), on a road that was covered with solid ice. It was stressful and no fun, but I didn’t slide once.
If you have to drive on snow and ice with even moderate frequency in the winter, snow tires will absolutely change your life… and maybe even save your life.

My first weekend of skiing for the season, my son and I did 12 runs, with a total distance of 23 miles and vertical descent of nearly 20,000 feet. Since I haven’t skied for seven months, my legs are now jelly. 😄

I feel like once you’ve reached a certain point in skiing, falls are either “I’m so embarrassed you saw that and I’m going to get up and ski away fast,” or “Help, I think something’s broken!”
Fortunately, my first fall of the season was the former… 😄

Anybody know if the Private Wi-Fi address setting in macOS Sequoia is intended to also anonymize the local hostname? I can’t find any documentation of this, but it seems that with this setting on Fixed or Rotating, it’s giving a generic name. Running:
sysctl -n kern.hostname
…results in the following name when Private Wi-Fi address is anything other than Off:
Mac.lan
Switching it to Off gives me:
Thomas-MacBook-Pro.local
Interestingly, scutil —get LocalHostName gives the correct name rather than Mac.lan, but I’m unsure whether this inconsistency is a bug, and if so which is the intended behavior.

Objective by the Sea is always an excellent conference, and I'd attend if it were held in a corn field in the middle of nowhere in Iowa. However, the amazing locations where the conference is held are frosting on the cake! Here are a few of my favorites while in Maui for the conference the last couple weeks.
